Sea-floor spreading occurs in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This area is called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is the place where two plates meet. These plates are the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Mantle oozes up through this crack and builds undersea mountains. This causes the plates to be pushed apart. This plate movement is also aided by convection cells in the mantle.
